Nearly 1 in 4 seniors lack sufficient social connection- and social isolation is linked to mental health risks like depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline.
When I first began volunteering with seniors in 2020, COVID-19 was at its peak. Through a mask, I witnessed firsthand the side effects no one seemed to be talking about- depression, anxiety, and loneliness. Our seniors were being forgotten right in front of our eyes, and I knew I had to do something about it. That’s when The Buddy System was born.
At just 20 years old, I started The Buddy System as a way to give back to the demographic most at risk during the pandemic. It was never meant to be a pageant platform… or even to grow into what it is today. I began with donations, but I quickly learned that the most powerful way to give back was completely free: connection.
While I helped my newfound friends navigate technology or read tiny print on everyday objects, they taught me about life. They passed down wisdom shaped by decades of experience. I learned that two people- no matter the age gap- can form a meaningful friendship and support each other through different seasons of life.
Along the way, I met my best friend: an 82-year-old man living with advanced Alzheimer’s. Although he couldn’t remember his children’s names or that Lyndon B. Johnson was no longer president, he knew me. He called me by name and proudly introduced me as his best friend. He passed away in 2023, and at first I didn’t think I could continue The Buddy System without him.
But if friendship could be stronger than a disease as heartbreaking as Alzheimer’s, I knew it could also be stronger than anxiety, depression, and the loneliness so many seniors face every day.
Since 2020, I’ve connected with over 1,000 seniors- all with one simple goal: to prove that friendship has no age limit.

Spotlight: Love For Our Elders
Connection doesn’t always have to happen face to face. Sometimes, it begins with a handwritten letter.
I’m proud to serve as an Ambassador for Love For Our Elders, a nonprofit dedicated to uplifting seniors experiencing loneliness and isolation through the power of handwritten mail. Their letter-writing program connects people of all ages with seniors who may not have regular visitors, family nearby, or consistent companionship.
As someone who has spent years building friendships with seniors through The Buddy System, I’ve seen firsthand how much words matter. A letter can be something a senior rereads, treasures, and holds onto- a reminder that they are seen, valued, and not forgotten.
If you’re looking for a simple yet meaningful way to make an impact, writing a letter is a beautiful place to start.
