Watch Her Series: Amelie Harvey(NAM Miss Nevada 2024)♡
Welcome to the Watch Her Series! Introducing you to extraordinary women you should be watching…
Today I’m featuring another Miss Sister Queen and the current NAM Miss Nevada!
Thank you Amelie for joining me on the Watch Her Series! Read about Amelie’s confidence and self acceptance journey below!
When did you start feeling confident in yourself, and what helped you get there?
I think I started really feeling confident in myself in high school when I started doing yoga really consistently. Having daily check-ins and giving myself the grace to understand that my body is different everyday has helped me be able to give to the people around me in a more sustainable manner.
Have you ever had to step outside your comfort zone to boost your self confidence?
Oh definitely. In my first year of high school I started to struggle a lot with anxiety, and I had to really step out of my comfort zone to relearn self confidence. I have found that once you’ve done something that you feel anxious about, it takes away that fear factor so I try to do the things that scare me at least once just so that I know I can. That is part of why I have made it a mission to try every NAM optional at least once.
How has being Miss Nevada helped boost your confidence?
Being Miss Nevada has been such an honor. Being able to work within my community and give back to all the people who helped me while I was growing up has been so incredibly fulfilling. I think the prep for Miss Nevada is what has helped shape my confidence the most. Being able to express myself to others, advocate for causes I am passionate about, and grow from constructive criticism has helped prepare me for my future. There is a confidence in knowing that you have gone after your dreams before and you can do it again.
How have societal beauty standards influenced your journey of self acceptance?
I think that beauty standards can make us hyper aware of little things, and that can set you back in the journey of self acceptance. That is a huge reason why I insist on wearing my hair curly at every competition. Being able to be confident in myself and what I have to offer is invaluable, and I really want to make pageantry a space where girls can see themselves represented. Getting to the point of comfortability with yourself to appreciate how your body changes day to day is definitely hard work but it is so rewarding
What advice would you give to someone struggling to embrace their authentic self?
Have compassion for your journey. Self love is not a linear journey and some days will be easier than others. Fitting into a mold may seem like the easiest option, but it is a lot of work to be something you’re not. Giving yourself space to make progress and have setbacks is, I think, the most important part of growing as a person and protecting your mental health.
